The Initiative conducted a study comparing admission statistics for the Specialized High Schools with income levels in Manhattan, New York. The link between performance on standardized tests and family income is fairly intuitive and is cemented by the maps below. The statistics show an undeniable and direct correlation between income and admissions to New York City's best public high schools. We consider it our mission to level the income-performance playing field for children seeking admission into the Specialized High Schools.

Admission numbers used are students admitted to Stuyvesant High School, Bronx Science High School and Brooklyn Technical High School between 2005 and 2007, per zip code. Admission percentages are calculated by diving admission numbers by 8th grade student population, by zipcode. Admission statistics are provided by the NYC Board of Education. Population and income information is taken from the U.S. Census website.
We ask for your support for our mission to create a truly competitive admissions process for children of all economic backgrounds to the best public high schools New York City has to offer.
